Membership at Wheeler Island

Wheeler Island is a private waterfowl club combining sporting tradition, camaraderie, and comfortable accommodations on one of Northern California's great waterfowl habitats. Memberships become available from time to time — here's what to know.

A Club on the Sacramento River

The club encompasses approximately 1,000 acres, including more than 1½ miles of frontage along the Sacramento River. The clubhouse sits directly on the riverbank, roughly two miles across the water from Pittsburg, with views across the marsh, river, and Delta.

The Clubhouse

The club's facilities span two buildings totaling approximately 15,000 square feet. Each of Wheeler's 21 members has a private suite with an individual shower, sink, and toilet — a comfortable place to stay throughout the hunting season and during offseason visits. At the heart of the clubhouse is a fully equipped commercial kitchen, and an adjoining dining room seating up to 40 — long the gathering place where Wheeler's stories and traditions pass from one generation to the next.

The Social Adjustment Room

Overlooking the marsh and river, the Social Adjustment Room features a full bar, gaming tables, a fireplace, and some of the finest views on the property — a favorite gathering place at the end of a day in the field.

Getting to the Island

The club operates a 28-foot twin-engine boat, fully equipped with modern navigation, to shuttle members and guests between Wheeler and the club's slip at McAvoy Harbor — used throughout hunting season and for offseason trips alike. Members arriving by their own boat have use of the club's 110-foot dock, with power and ample tie-offs.

The Hunting Grounds

Approximately 900 acres are devoted to hunting habitat — marshes, ponds, and waterways managed to preserve both quality hunting and the character of the island. Each member keeps an individual Jon boat and motor in the club's covered boathouse, alongside decoys and gear, for the trip out to the hunting ponds each morning.

The ponds and marsh have always been central to life at Wheeler. Members leave the clubhouse by boat and make their way through the property to their respective hunting areas, continuing a tradition repeated on the island for generations. The combination of river, managed wetlands, open water, and tule marsh gives Wheeler both its distinctive character and its enduring appeal as a waterfowl club.

A Family Club

During hunting season, meals and libations are included as part of membership — a tradition that reflects Wheeler's character: as much about the fellowship surrounding the hunt as the hunt itself. Many memberships have passed through multiple generations — fathers and sons, grandfathers and grandchildren, family and longtime friends sharing the same marsh enjoyed by those who came before. It's a club built around conservation, friendship, sportsmanship, and the traditions of gentleman hunting.
